I grew up with wholemeal bread, muddy root veg from the allotment, and home-made plum jam. At the grocery shop, we couldn’t buy tasty looking South African grapes because we supported Nelson Mandela. For a while I yearned for white sliced bread, Wotsits and Wagon Wheels, but as I grew to make my own shopping choices, those ingrained healthy habits returned.
Now I’m a children’s author and illustrator with a small family of my own, and whenever I need to make a shopping decision I can’t help but check all the options as carefully as my mum checked ingredients for ‘E-numbers’. I’ve decided to start this blog to share my research, and hopefully make it easier for other people to make informed, positive ethical shopping decisions.
